Aldous Leonard Huxley
Novelista, ensayista, crítico y poeta inglés
Nació el 26 de julio de 1894 en Godalming, Surrey (Gran Bretaña), en el seno
de una familia de gran tradición cultural. Su abuelo fue el célebre biólogo
Thomas Henry Huxley1 y su padre, Leonard Huxley, también biólogo. Su madre fue
Julia Arnold, una de las primeras mujeres en estudiar en Oxford, era nieta del
poeta Matthew Arnold y hermana de la novelista Mrs. Humphrey Ward. Cursó
estudios en las universidades de Eton y de Oxford. Trabajó en varios periódicos
y publicó cuatro libros de poesía antes de la aparición de su primera novela,
Los escándalos de Crome (1921). Las novelas Heno antiguo (1923) y Contrapunto
(1928), que ilustran el clima nihilista de la década de 1920, y Un mundo feliz
(1932), una visión deshumanizada y utópica del futuro, le lanzaron a la fama.
Fue durante este periodo cuando vivió en Italia y Francia. En 1937 dejó Europa
para pasar a vivir en Estados Unidos. Entre sus más de 45 libros se debe
destacar los de ensayo, Un Pilatos burlón (1926), Mañana y mañana y mañana
(1956), Nueva visita a un mundo feliz (1958) y Literatura y ciencia (1963).
Otras novelas son Ciego en Gaza (1936), Viejo muere el cisne (1939), Mono y
esencia (1948) y La isla (1962). Huxley también escribió crítica científica,
filosófica y social, con obras importantes como El arte de ver (1932), La
filosofía perenne (1946) y Los demonios de Loudon (1952). Se interesó mucho
por el misticismo y la parapsicología. Las puertas de la percepción (1954) y
su continuación, Cielo e infierno (1956), tratan de sus experiencias con drogas
alucinógenas. En 1919 contrae matrimonio con Marie Nys, una mujer belga
refugiada en Inglaterra durante la Gran Guerra. El 19 de mayo de 1956, se casó
con la violinista y psicoterapeuta italiana Laura Archera, y se trasladan a una
casa en una de las colinas de Hollywood. Falleció el 22 de Noviembre de
1963,ciego, el mismo día que el presidente J.F.Keennedy fue asesinado.
